The Ferry Building area is facing a serious parking shortage. Due to BCDC requirements and structural concerns about the Piers, the area faces the loss of the majority of its existing over-water parking spaces that are vital to the long-term sustainability of the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market and surrounding retail businesses. With the recent condemnation and subsequent closure of Pier ½, 100 of the most frequently used parking spaces have already been eliminated. Additionally, the opening of three to four restaurants at Piers 1 ½, 3 & 5, expected for later this year, will cause parking to become increasingly constrained. The 8 Washington project proposes to replace surface parking with a centrally located garage that would serve the Ferry Building and waterfront businesses, as well as residents. The garage would also include secure parking for bicycles and car sharing programs. Although significantly more expensive, SFWP is committed to locating all of the parking underground in order to ensure the most sound urban plan and use of the public areas. |
