The Neighborhood:
The removal of the Embarcadero Freeway after the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 signaled a renaissance along San Francisco's central waterfront that continues today. The centerpiece is the exquisite Ferry Building now restored to its historic grandeur as a center of commerce and transportation. Local residents and visitors enjoy the shops along the main hall and the proximity of ferries to Sausalito, Larkspur, Oakland, Vallejo and a circle route around the Bay.
The entire area is enlivened by the popular Farmer's Market with local producers bringing their fresh produce for sale. Food booths, cooking demonstrations, and live music provide a vibrant atmosphere drawing thousands of people every weekend. Piers 1 ½, 3 & 5, newly rehabilitated by San Francisco Waterfront Partners, now re-join the neighborhood, opening additional public access, restaurants and cafes and maritime activity. The 8 Washington project works to support the neighborhood by providing public parking for the Farmer's Market and surrounding businesses.
